Melvin Wauhob, 92, of Lisbon, died Monday, March 21, 2016, at the Clarence Nursing Home. Funeral services: 11 a.m. Thursday, March 24, at Seeds of Faith Lutheran Church, Lisbon, by Pastor Stephanie Malin. Visitation will be for one hour before the service at the church. Burial with military honors at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanics-ville. Arrangements are with Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon.
Survivors include his fiancee, Ruby Rathjen of Lisbon; son, John (Nancy) Hamlet of Glendale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Jeffrey Hamlet and Brendt Hamlet; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Madison; nephews, Michael (Sheryl) Koch of Lisbon, Patrick Koch of Cedar Rapids, Thomas (Shelly) Koch of Cedar Rapids and Daniel (Yolunda) Koch of Mechanicsville; and niece, Judy (Ron) Ferguson of South Bridge, Mass.
Melvin was born July 15, 1923, in Sioux City, Iowa. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1941, serving as an aerial gunner on five missions before his 18th birthday. He was aboard the USS Lexington during the Battle of the Coral Sea eventually going missing before being rescued and returned to the mainland.
Melvin worked in commercial semi-truck sales, traveling all over the country and representing several companies during his career. He loved to travel and enjoyed playing golf and fishing. He was a member of Seeds of Faith Lutheran Church and American Legion Post No. 309 in Mechanicsville. Melvin will be remembered for his special charm and kindness.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Donna.
