Melvin Andrew Schulte,

95, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, at Mercy Hallmar. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Thursday,

St. Patrick Catholic Church, by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family after 9 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 72 years and best friend, Marj; his son, Craig (Martha Parsons) of Cedar Rapids; his grandson, Aaron of Minneapolis; his brother, William (Fran) Schulte of Amana; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Hazel Schulte; and his sister and brother-in-law, Audrey and Tom Erwood.

Melvin was born March 30, 1923, in Norway, the son of William and Anna Thoman Schulte. He attended St. Michael's School in Norway and graduated from Walford High School in 1940. After meeting at Danceland, Melvin married Marjorie Fay Tecklenburg on Sept. 3, 1946, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. He worked at Wilson-Farmstead Foods for 36 years, retiring in 1983, and later at Von Maur department store for nine years. Melvin was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and an extraordinary minister. He served Mass for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Catholic Laymen's Club, serving as president and vice president, and a member of the Legion of Mary. Melvin was a trustee for the Wilson Pre-Retirees Trust.

Melvin loved to dance, golf, read and attend sporting events, especially his grandson's ice skating, cross country and sports meets. He was a special husband, father and grandfather. He loved laughing. Melvin had a unique sense of humor and was a friend to all. We will miss his smile and kind ways.
