Melvin Neal, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, at Oldorf Hospice House, Hiawatha. Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Graveside service 1:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military rites.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Bonnie (Terry) Ehlinger and their children, Troy and Melissa Davis, great-granddaughter, Elisabeth Davis, all of Vinton; son, Gary Neal of Cedar Rapids, and his children, Lisa Neal and family and Heather Manley and family; two brothers; six sisters; lifelong friend, Lynn Jacobson of Cedar Rapids; and his dog, Mia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; three sisters; and great-grandson, William Knight.
Melvin was born Oct. 16, 1933, the son of Roy and Effie Neal. He attended school in Weldon, Iowa. After school, he entered the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. In 1958, he married Marilynne Nail. They later divorced.
Melvin worked at St. Patrick's School and later for the Cedar Rapids School District. He then started Mel's Auto retiring in 1995. Upon retirement, he helped with deliveries for Medicap Pharmacy. In 2000, he married Cheryl Clinton. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved entertaining family and friends at his cabin.
