Melvin “Mel” William Stepanek, 100, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Monday, July 22, 2024, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 9 to10 a.m. on Friday, July 26, 2024, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, with Funeral Mass to follow at 10 a.m. Burial: Anderson Cemetery, Swisher, Iowa. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, is assisting the family.
Mel was born January 20, 1924, in Swisher, Iowa, the son of William and Mary (Horsky) Stepanek. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force from 1943 – 1946 during World War II. Mel was united in marriage to Evelyn Grimm in Millersburg, Iowa on November 24, 1951. He worked at Rockwell Collins for 37 years, retiring in 1987. Mel was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, the Eagles Club, and a past member of the American Legion and the Cedar Rapids Veteran’s Club. He enjoyed bowling and golfing.
Survivors include his sons, Wendell (Connie) Stepanek of Cedar Rapids and Denny (June) Stepanek of Manchester, Iowa; grandchildren, Jason Stepanek (Sivi Rasmussen-Power), Chad Stepanek, Jarrod Stepanek, Stacy (Nathan) Fett, and Lindsey (Alex) Grimm; five great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog and cat.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn; and sister, Gladys Benish.
