Melvin “Mel” Lee Campbell, 89, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022. Family will greet friends and family from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, conducted by Pastor Mike Morgan. Burial will take place at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.
Mel was born on July 24, 1933, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Sam and Ruth (Jones) Campbell. He attended schools in California and Iowa and graduated from Davenport Central High School. Mel met Wanda Jean Brenneman and they were united in marriage on Jan. 31, 1952, in Davenport. He served honorably in the U.S. Army in Germany, from April of 1953 to 1955, during the Korean War. After his discharge, Mel and his family moved to Ames. He attended Iowa State University, receiving a degree in mechanical engineering in May of 1959. They then moved to Marion. Mel worked for Collins Radio and both enjoyed and excelled at his work as a design engineer, receiving multiple patents for his work. He retired after 40 years. He was a member of Marion Methodist Church and the Marion Historical Society. Mel enjoyed playing cards and attending live music concerts.
Mel is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 70 years, Wanda Campbell of Marion; three children, Janet Campbell of Denver, Colo., Sheryl (Mark) Morgan of Marion and Gary (Karen) Campbell of Coopersburg, Pa.; five grandchildren, Angela Johnson, Kimberly Haugh, Susan (Sean) Haemmerle, Leann Morgan and Daniel (Allison) Morgan; seven great-grandchildren, Jack, Andrew, and Sawyer Johnson, Rowland and Declan Morgan and Eliza and Trent Haemmerle; three sisters-in-law, Loretta (Jack) Meyers, Virginia (Gary) Swartzendruber and Jane Buesing; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glenn and Lloyd Campbell; and three sisters, Inez, Rowena and Annetta.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to either Camp Courageous at 12007 190th St., Monticello, IA 52310; or to Discovery Living at 1015 Old Marion Rd. NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
