MELVIN HERINK
Traer
Melvin G. Herink, 88, of Traer, passed away June 5, 2015, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. Private burial will be at a later date.
Melvin was born April 24, 1927, to Joe and Ella (Hanus) Herink in Clutier, Iowa. He graduated from Traer High School in 1944. After school, Melvin served with the United States Army in World War II with the 1st Cavalry Division during the occupation of Japan. On Nov. 20, 1954, Melvin married Lorna Jean Steiert at Peace Church in Gladbrook.
He enjoyed flying his own airplanes, Midwest Antique Aircraft Club, polka music and amateur radio (call sign W0HWW). He also was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 142 of Traer.
Melvin worked as a self-employed farmer for over 50 years before retiring.
Melvin is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Richard) Sorenson of Ankeny and Wendy Herink-Schilling (Michael Schilling) of Des Moines; and two grandchildren, Alexander and Joshua Schilling.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorna; parents; and brother, Milo Herink.
