Melvin E. Cook, 101, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018, at the Meth-Wick Community. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 10, 2018, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. A visitation will be held 1 hour before the service at the church. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Ivan Nienhaus will officiate.
Survivors include a son, Robert (Denise) Cook of Marshalltown; a daughter, Mary Jean Prull of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Jeff Cook; seven grandchildren, Tara Thompson, Shara Goodrich, Brian Prull, Ami Leonard, Jeremy Cook, Dan Cook and Nate Cook; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Melvin was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mary; a son-in-law, Jim Prull; and a great-grandson, Shane Prull.
Melvin was born Aug. 12, 1917, to Ervin and Ozela (VanFleet) Cook in South English, Iowa. He married Mary Dahlem on Sept. 19, 1942, at St. Patrick's Church in Cedar Rapids. Melvin worked as a firefighter for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department. When he left the fire department he was district chief of the east side.
Memorial donations may be directed to the family, St. Patrick's Church or the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.
