Melberg, Vernon C.
Vernon C. Melberg, 92, of Iowa City, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at his home following a brief illness. Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at Grace Fellowship Church, 3980 Poweshiek St. SE, Iowa City, with the Rev. Gary Miller officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the church or to the Mercy Hospital Foundation for the Mercy Hospice.
Vernon was born May 13, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Carl and Zelma Cochran Melberg. He was raised in Chicago and attended Concordia College in Minneapolis. Vernon proudly served in the Navy Air Corps during World War II. On Sept. 4, 1941, he married Beverly Stafford in Topeka, Kan.
Vernon had been employed by the U.S. Postal Service and later was the vice president and superintendent of construction for Melvin Construction Co. in Chicago. Vernon and Beverly lived in LaGrange, Ill., for many years, moving to Iowa City in 1983.
He was a member of Grace Fellowship Church and was an avid golfer, Hawkeye fan and enjoyed landscape and portrait painting.
Survivors include his two daughters, Merrilee (Robert) Beckman of Iowa City and Myia (Jack) Sterling of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; four grandchildren, Michael (Karen) Beckman of Philadelphia, Mari (Eric) Beckman-Lau of Brooklyn, N.Y., Nathan (Monica) Lockrem and Christopher (Amy) Lockrem, both of Denver; nine great-grandchildren, Siduri, Asher, Lua, Rowan, Eleri, Conner, Simon, Bruno and Dietrich; and his special friend and caregiver, Twylla Allen.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beverly; and brother, Maurice.
