Ricky Newell Meeks was born Aug. 9, 1951, at Mercy Hospital, Anamosa, Iowa, the son of Newell and Jean (Achenbach) Meeks. Rick graduated from the Olin High School in 1969. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1971 and served until 1975. Rick married Barbara Melchert on Oct. 20, 1973, at St. John's Catholic Church, Mount Vernon. The couple lived in San Diego while Rick was in the service and then in Marion and Springville. He was employed at General Mills for a while. He had just retired from ADM after 34 years of employment there.
Rick was a member of the Anamosa AMVETS, American Legion, a charter member and past president of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4512, and member of the Patriot Guard, ABATE of Iowa, and Knights of Columbus.
Rick enjoyed his eighth child, his motorcycle, the blue mule and the rides it took him on. This was one of his greatest passions. Another great passion was spending his free time helping others through the many clubs/groups he was involved in.
He will be remembered for his great smile and ability to make others smile. And most of all his loud “honking” noises.
