Meeks, Maxine Frederick (Voss)
Maxine Frederick (Voss) Meeks, 82, of Fairfax, died Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at West Ridge Care Center, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, with burial to follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, where there will be a 4 p.m. vigil.
Maxine was born Jan. 29, 1930, in Davenport, the daughter of James and Sadie (Carney) Frederick. Maxine graduated from St. Patrick's High School and Mount Mercy College. She married Russell Meeks on Nov. 22, 1982. Maxine met her calling in life teaching kindergarten. She was recognized multiple times, with one of her most memorable being Iowa Teacher of the Year. She taught school for 41 years, with Blairstown, Cedar Rapids, and College Community Schools.
Maxine is survived by her children, Larry (Gail) Voss of Rockford, Ill., Theresa (Brad) Borgstede of Colleyville, Texas, and Caroline (Dave) Kemper of Cedar Rapids; 15 grandchildren; a great-grandson; sisters, Jean (Lester) Fetzer of Williamsburg, Marie Cole of Sun City, Ariz., Rita (Duane) Siedschlag of Hot Springs, Ark., and Frannie (Bill) Schulte of Amana; brother-in-law, Jim Meeks of Oberly, Mo.; sister-in-law, Velma Meeks of Kansas City, Mo.; and her stepchildren, Lela Kratz of Walterburrow, S.C., Dr. Rita Meeks of Mount Airy, N.C., and Rory Meeks of Springville.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Meeks; her parents; an infant sister, Delores; and a stepdaughter, Nola Mason Meeks.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the West Ridge Care Center and Hospice of Mercy staff, and especially those every day angels who faithfully visited and cared for Maxine week after week for the past 18 months: Margaret Probasco, Helen Wall, Nancy Kodros, Julie Kruser, Myrna Ballard, Dixie Reed and Loraine Bomkamp.
