Mead, Dean Collier
Dean Collier Mead, 95, of Anamosa, died Saturday, May 7, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 12, at the United Methodist Church of Anamosa. The Rev. Laurie Riley will officiate at the service. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa. Interment will be at North Madison Cemetery in Center Junction.
Surviving are his daughters, Bernna Deane Hawkins of Victor, Kay (Randall) Betz of Marengo and Jane Roehs of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Dorothy Smith of Anamosa; 10 grandchildren, Jill (John) McCallister, Kevin (Maria) Hawkins, Bruce (Becky) Hawkins, Jeff (Michele) Hawkins, Marla Betz, Jon (Val) Betz, Brian (Gabrielle) Betz, Jason (Ozlem) Jenkins, Alison Roehs and Andrea (Peter Ekstam) Roehs; 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Judy (Delmar) Phillips of Anamosa; and their children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Berneice on April 29, 1980, and Helen on Jan. 10, 2010; a sister, Mildred Iosty; three brothers, Myron, Dillon and Robert; and two sons-in-law, Richard Hawkins and Paul Roehs.
Dean Collier Mead was born Oct. 18, 1915, in Center Junction, Iowa. He was the son of William and Blanche (Collier) Mead. Dean was a 1933 graduate of Center Junction High School. Dean worked for Wilson & Co. and as a truck driver on and off for many years. On Oct. 18, 1935, Dean and Berneice Juilfs were united in marriage in Cedar Rapids; she preceded him in death. On Feb. 6, 1981, Dean and Helen Hart Ricklefs were united in marriage in Hiawatha; she preceded him in death.
Dean was a member of the United Methodist Church of Anamosa for 30 years. Dean loved his cars, flying his airplane and traveling. He enjoyed meeting people, Dean never forgot a name. He enjoyed spending time with his sister, Dorothy. But the thing Dean treasured most was the time he was given to spend with his family and friends.
Dean was a loving son, husband, brother, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, great-great-grandpa and friend and he will be missed dearly by those who knew him best.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Anamosa United Methodist Church or Camp Courageous.
