McVey, Lucille Armstrong
Lucille Armstrong McVey, 98, of Marion, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids. Friends may call at the chapel after 2:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Lucille's family includes daughters, Patricia Bailey of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Gertrude Bader of Cherry Valley, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Debra (Rick) Harris, Dennis (Lorraine) Bader, Bob Bader, Robin (Robert) Snell, Douglas Bader, David Bailey, Diane (Nick) Morton, Karen (Dave) Harwell, Dawn (Bill) Gerlich and Jay (Amber) Moser; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Lucille is also survived by one brother-in-law, Marion Armstrong; and three sisters-in-law, Faye, Elaine and Velma Armstrong.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Lawrence and Russell Slaymaker; half sisters, Blanche Smoley and Marie Collins; husbands, Maurice Armstrong and Claire McVey; daughter, Joyce Moser; and sons-in-law, Bob Bader, Jim Bailey and Dale Moser.
Lucille was born Jan. 19, 1913, to Ernest Grafton and Nina (Miller) Slaymaker, in Marengo. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1931. She married Maurice Armstrong on July 18, 1931, in Nashua and they farmed near Van Horne. In 1936, they moved and farmed in the Springville area. They had three daughters, Patricia, Gertrude and Joyce. Lucille farmed until 1967, when Maurice passed away.
In 1972, she married Claire McVey and they resided in Marion until his death in 1980. Lucille worked at Sears and Younkers when she retired from farming.
She was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Wednesday Study Club and New Encounters.
A memorial fund has been established in her honor.
