McNulty, David Charles
David Charles McNulty, 73, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at his home of congestive heart failure. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Inurnment at a later date: St. John's Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Dave was born Aug. 9, 1936, in Cedar Rapids, the first son of the late Charles and Helen (Nebendahl) McNulty. He graduated from St. Patrick's High School, Cedar Rapids, in 1955. On June 13, 1955, he married the love of his life, Diane Gail Darragh. Dave was employed by LeFebure Corporation and Amana Corporation as promotions director and golf tournament planner. He owned the advertising agency, Visual Advantage, and for many years was an estimator for Marion Cashway and Payless Cashway.
In 1954, he was honored by Iowa Governor Leo Hoegh with the Iowa Governor's Top Valor Award for Heroism for saving the life of a boy drowning in the Cedar River. Dave was an accomplished Golden Gloves Boxer. In the early 1950s, he was a DJ for local radio station KPIG with his own Saturday a.m. show. He played softball and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed boating, fishing, spending time with his family and friends at the family boathouse in the Cedar Rapids harbor, and wintering in Seadrift, Texas.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Diane; two sons, Jeffrey McNulty and Michael (Julie) McNulty, both of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Erin (Ray) Ramirez of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; grandchildren, Ryan and Courtney McNulty of Cedar Rapids and Matthew, Lauren and David Ramirez of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; brother, William (LeNae) McNulty of Williamsburg; many nieces and nephews; best friends, Cecil and Peggy Calkins of Des Moines; and special friends, Georgie Dade and Dean Wilson of Seadrift, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant son, Gregory.
