McNamara, Donald R.
Donald R. McNamara, 61, of Ryan, died at home Thursday, July 19, 2012. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 23, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ryan by the Rev. Richard Gaul. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church, where there will be a 2 p.m. Scripture service. Additional visitation will be one hour before the mass Monday at the church. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Monti, with military honors provided by the Marine Honor Guard, the Ryan American Legion and the Delaware County Honor Guard. Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremations Services, Manchester, is in charge of arrangements.
Don was born Feb. 28, 1951, in Manchester, the son of Bernard and Mary (Cooney) McNamara. Raised in Monti, he attended East Buchanan High School, graduating from Boys Town in 1969. Don served with the United States Marine Corps from February 1970 until February 1972. He was united in marriage to Peg Melchert on Oct. 18, 1975. Three daughters were born to this union.
Don worked for Delaware County for 11 years as a road maintainer and 17 years for the Ryan Coop. Don was a member of Ryan American Legion Post 692 and served on the Ryan Fire Department. Don enjoyed golf, playing cards, and coaching his girls' softball teams.
Don is survived by his wife of 36 years, Peg McNamara of Ryan; three children, Carrie (Shannon Sauerbry) McNamara of Manchester, Cristy (Christian Skubal) McNamara of Cedar Rapids and CeAnn McNamara of Austin, Texas; two grandsons, Gavin and Hudson Sauerbry; three siblings, Bernard “Jim” (Shirley) McNamara of Cedar Rapids, Mary Rita (Kenneth “Red”) Greiner of Toddville and Joe (Lois) McNamara of Ryan; and his in-laws, Vernon and Therese Melchert of Hopkinton.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Mary McNamara.
A memorial fund has been established in Don's memory.
