McEnany, Terry L.
Terry L. McEnany, 59, of Marshalltown, formerly of Winthrop and Nichols Hills, Okla., died Friday, May 11, 2012, at the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown.
He was born May 31, 1952, in Independence, son of Louis A. and Stella (Lyness) McEnany.
From 1996 until 2007, he was the executive director for the Oklahoma Funeral Board. He was recognized for his leadership role in developing educational programs for the profession and general public and in advocating key legislation strengthening consumer protection.His career spanned over four decades as a nationally recognized educator and state official receiving commendations from Texas and Oklahoma governors, legislatures and colleges.
Terry earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Central Oklahoma and a master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa.He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He began a career in funeral service at an early age practicing in Waterloo and Des Moines.In 1981, he joined the faculty of Pierce College and rose through the ranks from professor to college president, the youngest college president in the nation at the age of 29.
In 1988, he served as founding president constructing the Commonwealth College in Houston, Texas.He was later elected president of its board of regents.In 1992, he served as founding regent of the funeral museum in Houston.He also served as vice chairman of the board of trustees and dean of Academic Affairs of the Simmons Institute in Syracuse, N.Y.
Terry served in various other professional, civic and fraternal organizations, including past chairman of the Council of Universities and Colleges of American Board, Committee on Accreditation, past president of the National Association of Private Colleges, board member of the Academy of Professional Service Practice and was involved in developing several of the professions' textbooks and a contributing author of “Embalming, History Theory and Practice.”
Survivors include a brother, James A. (Audra) McEnany of Marion; a sister, Peggy White of Worthington; a brother-in-law, Mel Gerard of Naperville, Ill.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Linda Gerard.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by the Iowa Army Honor Guard.Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Fawcett's Funeral Home in Winthrop, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil.
