Lillian A. McCormick, 93, of Iowa City, formerly of Burlington, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville.
Lillian was born April 23, 1920, in Quincy, Ill., the daughter of George and Lillian (Niehaus) Slater. She attended schools in Quincy, graduating from high school there in 1937. She continued living in Quincy for a number of years when she met and married her husband, Richard Gaines. Following his death, she married Lloyd McCormick. She left Quincy, to live in Hannibal, Mo., for a short time and then moved to Burlington, where she lived over 50 years before moving to Iowa City.
In Burlington, she worked for National Research Bureau for 23 years before retiring in 1983. She had a lifetime passion of music, playing as the church organist for her church in Burlington for years while also singing in that choir and numerous other community choirs.
She was a member of Eastern Star and member and former president of Altrusa Club both of Burlington. She volunteered as a pen pal for the schools in Burlington and Iowa City and she so enjoyed sharing her time and love with the children and families of the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City while living here.
Her family includes her children, Linda Ciolek
(Dorian) of Pinedale, Wyo., Ed Gaines of Iowa City and Barbara Duncan (Steve) of Solon; three grandchildren, Sarah Knight (Chris), Daniel Ciolek and Betsy Hendrickson (Curtis); three great-grandchildren, Logan Hendrickson, Austin Knight and Gable Knight; Lillian's sister, Irene Donhardt of Normal, Ill.; her brother, Bill Slater (Helen) of Quincy, Ill.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Lillian was preceded in death by her husbands, four sisters and a brother.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Iowa City, with burial to take place at the Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.
In lieu of flowers, Lillian's request was to continue to support Uptown Bills - Extend The Dream Foundation at 730 S. Dubuque St., Iowa City, IA 52240.
