McConkey, Frank 'Mac'
Frank “Mac” McConkey, 90, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, at Keystone Cedars Assisted Living, Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Harlan Gillespie officiating. Burial with military honors in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his daughter, Marilyn McConkey Boyles and her husband, Roger of Cedar Rapids; niece, Diane Hayes of Cedar Rapids; and nephews, Dick Cornish of Cedar Rapids, and Joe Freshwater of Lowell, Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn; son, Jim McConkey; parents, Frank and Anna McConkey; and his brother, James McConkey.
Frank McConkey Jr. was born July 31, 1921, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Frank and Anna (Havlik) McConkey. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1939. He started at Coe College then went on to serve his country in the United States Army, where he fought during World War II. After returning from the war he completed his degree at Coe. Following graduation Frank was employed for a short period of time with Perpetual Savings and Loan. In 1947, Frank took a position with Cedar Rapids Auto Supply (Sieg), where he worked until his retirement in 1983.
Frank married Carolyn June Cornish on Nov. 17, 1947, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, his beloved Carolyn passed away on Aug. 19, 2006. After retirement Frank and Carolyn moved to Walker, Minn., and enjoyed many years on the lake. They returned to Cedar Rapids in their later years to be closer to their daughter.
He was a life long member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, a former Masonic Lodge member and an avid Iowa Hawkeye Football fan.
Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Frank's name.
