McAllister, Robert V.
Robert V. McAllister, 77, of Cascade, left peacefully early Monday, August 1, 2011, at 1:10 a.m., at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. He was reunited in heaven with his wife of 50 years, Margie. Friends and relatives of Robert may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 4, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, where a wake service will be held at 2 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. Services for Robert V. McAllister will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 5, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cascade, with full military honors afforded by the Cascade American Legion Post No. 528.
Robert was born May 10, 1934, on the home farm near Cascade, Iowa, son of Joseph and Angeline (Klein) McAllister. He received his education in the country schools for four years and then at the former St. Mary's School in Cascade. On Feb. 11, 1956, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Margie E. McDermott. The couple farmed on the family farm for 30 years. He then worked for his brother-in-law at Cedar Rapids Janitorial for nine years. He later worked at Cigrand Brothers John Deere until his retirement in 2000.
Bob was a most loving and caring man. He was well liked by all. Though Bob will be missed by his friends and family, he leaves behind many happy memories. He enjoyed dancing and card playing.
He is an Army veteran, for which he volunteered, reporting to Fort Leonardwood, Mo., in February 1954 for training, after which time he was station in Fort Bliss, Texas, for artillery training. He was then stationed in Germany until Dec. 31, 1955, when he was honorably discharged.
Bob was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade, the Cascade American Legion Post No. 528 and the Cascade Knights of Columbus Council No. 930.
He is survived by eight children, Dave McAllister of Cascade, Pat (Bonnie) McAllister of Dubuque, Marty (Donna) McAllister of Ely, Pete (Chris) McAllister of Cascade, Diane (Greg) Wagner of Dubuque, Rob (Kathy) McAllister of Cascade, Jamie (Tammy) McAllister and Vic (Cher) McAllister of Marion; 23 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joe (Margie) McAllister of Palmetto, Fla., and Charles (Bev) McAllister of Marion; four sisters, Alberta (Hal) VanNest of Cedar Rapids, Sister Dolores, OSF of Dubuque, Rita (Jerry) Hoffman of Greendale, Wis., and Cecelia (Joe) Koob of Monticello; and two sisters-in-law, Flo McAllister and Marlene McAllister.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margie E. McAllister on Feb. 7, 2007; four brothers, James, Don, Paul and Tom McAllister; and four sisters, Irene Huber, Loretta Minton, Margaret Bakey and Kathleen McAllister.
