MAXINE MARY BASTEN ZIMMERMAN

Maxine Mary Basten Zimmerman, 97, of Solon, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, at the Solon Retirement Village. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at Brosh Chapel in Solon, located at 100 S. Cedar St., with Father Tim Sheedy presiding. Food and fellowship will follow in The Avacentre. Burial will be held in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be one hour before the services Friday at Brosh Chapel.
Maxine was born Aug. 17, 1918, in Oelwein, the daughter of Guy Arthur and Lulu May (Bennett) Gillingham. Maxine was united in marriage to Leo Basten on March 15, 1938, in Hazleton. To this union, five children were born. Leo died on April 9, 1985. She then married James Zimmerman on Nov. 4, 1988, until his passing on July 4, 1998.
Maxine enjoyed painting, sculpting, sewing Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and most of all spending time with her family.
Maxine is survived by her children, Aaron (Loretta) Basten of Solon, David (Julie) Basten of Marion and Kenneth (Jacqueline) Basten of Walford; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Wendy Basten of New Carlisle, Ohio; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; two children, Leo Basten Jr. and Annette Netherton-Moreland; four siblings, Arleta Leaton, John Gillingham, Howard Gillingham and Earl Gillingham; and an infant grandson, Matthew Basten.
