Maxine Peiffer, 100, of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, March 27, 2023, at the Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa.
Celebration of life services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023, at St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Bernie Weir officiating. Calling hours will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington at a later date. Luncheon will follow the service on Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Washington. Memorials have been established for St. James Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters or Hospice of Washington County online condolences may be sent for Maxine’s family at www.jonesfh.com.
Maxine was born Sept. 1, 1922, at home in Keokuk County, Iowa, the daughter of John H. and Anna (Beer) Reber. She attended rural school near Wellman, and What Cheer, Iowa. She graduated from What Cheer High School in 1942. She completed secretarial college in Iowa City in 1943. Maxine was united in marriage to Edward A. Peiffer on Feb. 12, 1947, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek, Iowa.
In the 1940s, Maxine worked at the Keokuk County Court House in Sigourney as the Deputy Auditor. Following her marriage, she was a homemaker and worked with her husband on the family farm.
She was a member of the St. James Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters. Maxine was in charge of meals at the KC Hall from 1977-1982. She was a former member of the Creative Living Chapter of Fortnightly and was an active member of the Antioch Social Club. Maxine loved to stay active. She enjoyed her daily walks, gardening, traveling and playing pinochle.
She is survived by her son, Daniel H. (Jean) Peiffer of Washington, Iowa; son, Alvin E. Peiffer of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Rose Mary Williams of Grimes, Iowa; daughter, Marjorie Ann (Russell) Snider of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; daughter, Linda Marie Peiffer of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, C. Leroy Reber of Wayland, Iowa; sister, Anna May Reber of Sigourney, Iowa; sister, Mabel Louise Fisher of Sigourney, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward in 1976; brother, Howard Reber; brother, John Reber, Jr; daughter-in-law, Janet Peiffer and son-in-law, Cris Williams.
