Maxine Rose Heffernan, 89, of Manchester, died Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.
She was born March 3, 1925, in Ryan, the daughter of Harry and Bernadine (Duggan) McCrea. Maxine attended Ryan and Coggon schools and graduated from Jesup High School in 1943. She received her normal teacher training at Iowa State Teachers College and taught in rural schools.
On June 21, 1948, Maxine was united in marriage to Kenneth V. Heffernan at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Masonville. Six children were born to this union. Together they farmed near Winthrop and later Greeley. They moved to rural Manchester in 1972.
Maxine was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Greeley and a current member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester.
Maxine enjoyed her family, especially her grand-children and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her six children, Tom (JoAnn) Heffernan of Strawberry Point, Jim (Sally) Heffernan of Normal, Ill., Mary (Ron) Funke of Manchester, Mike (Cindy Sheets) Heffernan of Ottumwa, Joe (Ruth) Heffernan of Manchester and Louie (Lori) Heffernan of Manchester; 14 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grand-children.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth, on Jan. 4, 2007; and one brother, Melvin (Bernice) McCrea.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11 a.m. Monday, March 10, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manchester, by the Rev. Richard Gaul. Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, where there will be a 2 p.m. Scripture service. Friends may also call after 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Interment will be at a later date at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Manchester.
