Max J. Dirks, 76, of Scotch Grove, died Thursday, March 13, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 17, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Monticello, with burial in the church cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Reed Stockman.
Max was born Dec. 25, 1937, in Scotch Grove, the son of Henry and Anna (Lieneman) Dirks. He married Karen Zuber on June 13, 1965, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Homestead. Max and Karen farmed their entire lives on the home farm in Scotch Grove.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; three children, Max Alan (Renee) Dirks of Casey, Mark (Sheryle) of Durham, N.C., and Debra (Aaron) Kurt of Monticello; nine grandchildren, Max Jarrett, Geoffery and Adrianna Dirks, Nolan and Cole Dirks, Kayla, Lauren, Emily and Austin Kurt; and in-laws, Dale (Ruth), Richard (Barb) and Larry (Fran) Zuber, Kathy (David) Jones and Marty Gehring.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Joel Thomas Dirks in 2002; and a brother, Chauncey (Pat) Dirks.
Memorials preferred to the St. John's Christian Daycare.
