Maurice "Mike" V. Brannaman, 97, of rural Martelle, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2016, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mount Vernon, by the Rev. John R. Flaherty. Visitation:
5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Burial with military honors: St. John Catholic Cemetery, Lisbon.
Survivors include his children, Roger (Karla) of Marshalltown, Mary Kay (James) Dostart of Manchester and James (Carol) of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, John (Deena) Dostart, Kate Dostart, Michael (Sara) Brannaman, Brett Brannaman and Robert Brannaman; great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Bethany Dostart and Audrey Brannaman; sister-in-law, Fonda Brannaman of Alaska; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Maurice was born July 28, 1918, in rural Sutfliff, Iowa. He was the oldest child of Warren and Alma (Kadera) Brannaman. Maurice received his education in the rural school east of Sutliff. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945, including areas of the North Atlantic, England and the Mediterranean Sea.
He married Mildred Schulte on Jan. 6, 1945, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Walford. They shared 68 years together until her death on Nov. 30, 2013. Following the Navy, Maurice worked at the elevator in Walford, then was a farmer in the Lisbon area, and later south of Martelle.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred; sisters, Marge (Ed) Harmell and Velma (Oliver) Clark; and brother, Charles Brannaman.
