MAUREEN "MAURY" (STEELE) STREIT
Cedar Rapids
Maureen "Maury" (Steele) Streit died on Aug. 26, 2021. Funeral Mass will be at
10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, at
St. Patrick's Church, Cedar Rapids. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, with a family led contemplative service the last half hour. Burial will follow funeral Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery on Sisly Grove Road in Cedar Rapids. After burial, lunch will follow at Cox Hall, St. Patrick Parish Center.
Born Aug. 14, 1935, in Waukon, Iowa, Maury was the eldest child of Gertrude (Sweeney) Steele and Daniel J. Steele. She received her education at St. Cecelia in Ames, Iowa, followed by St. Ludmila and then St. Patrick's in Cedar Rapids. She went on to receive a B.S.N. degree from SUI. Her education was enhanced by life at Steele's Nursing Home and work experience at Harmony Cafeteria and Highly Building Elevator.
On Aug. 10, 1957, began the most challenging and rewarding rest of her life as wife of Michael M. Streit and mother of seven sons and the one daughter born to them.
A more than 40-year nursing career was reconfigured and patched together many times to put family first. It included Cedar Rapids VNA, Mercy Hospital in both Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, University of Iowa Hospital. VAMC, Midwest Medical and a term stint with UMW Madison.
Over the years, the family was involved in many activities at both St. Patrick's and St. Jude's that included Cub Scouts, Campfire, St. Margaret Mary Circle and a serendipitist involvement with Haiti. Her initial Haiti experience was through VOSH Iowa, ST, and Joseph's Boy's Home led to (among other things) facilitating the first visit of Haiti Resurrection Theater to Cedar Rapids.
Maury was most grateful for church, family freedom and the great variety of lives that touched hers. She most regrets not having more time with each individual child. Her favorite activities included Mass, Benediction, the annual family holiday program, participating in the BIX, ice skating with grandchildren, biking, dancing in the kitchen and organized chaos.
She is survived by husband, Mike; children, Mark (Becky), Mitch (Melissa), Monte, Matthew (Ronda), Martin (Donna), Andrew (Peggy), Peter (Jane) and Molly (Rob) Bryer; grandchildren, Caitlin (Brad) Teplicky, Michael J. (Kaylee), Michaela, Michenzie, Mason, Madison, Megan (Alex) Dawson, Marissa (Mason) O'Neill, Ryan, Colin, Benjamin, Christopher, Cameron, Zachary, Eilen, Haelen Streit and Brayden, Alyssa and Colton Bryer; and great-grandchildren, Adeline and Evelyn Teplicky. She is survived also by her sister, Anne Doyle; and brother, Fred Steele.
She was preceeded in death by parents, Dan and Gertrude; and two grandchildren, Jacob Streit and Arianna Bryer.
