Matthews, Alma M.

Alma M. Matthews, 95, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at Northbrook Manor Care Center. Services: 1:30 p.m. today at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, where friends may call after 12:30 p.m. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Alma is survived by her son Lyle, wife Pat, grandson John, wife Liz, and great-grandchildren, Holly and Jacy. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
Alma was preceded in death by her husband, John; grandson, Tim; great-granddaughter, Hietina; her parents, two sisters and three brothers.
Alma was born Sept. 11, 1914, in Langworthy, Iowa, to John and Jeanette Knake. She married John M. Matthews on Sept. 29, 1942, in Kirksville, Mo. Alma was a constant volunteer and always on a mission. Early years consisted of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and PTA at all levels from elementary through high school and at the state level. Alma and John also volunteered at the Veterans hospital in Iowa City. They were also strong members of the Eagles, Moose and AMVETS. She and John held nearly all offices in the Eagles Club and REAC group.
The family wishes to thank the Northbrook Staff for their loving care the past seven years. Also, thank you to St. Luke's Hospice for its concern and care these past four months.
