Matthew John Roes, D.C., M.D., 46, of Robins, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016, in his home. Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Martha Rogers. The family will greet friends an hour before the service. A reception will immediately follow the service at the Legacy Center at Murdoch-Linwood.
Survivors include his spouse, Gerald Anzalone, D.C., of Robins; mother, Carol Roes of Robins, formerly of Davenport; dogs, Kyle, Taylor, Tiffany and Marty; lifelong friend, Cindy Barnett of Cedar Rapids, and her children, Sophie Gist of Cedar Rapids, Alex Barnett, J.D., of Davenport and Adam Barnett, E.I.T., of Austin, Texas; and two biological half sisters, Sarah (Tim) Perkins and her three children of Davenport and Rachel (Donny) Nelson and her two children of DeWitt.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Roes; and his grandparents.
Dr. Roes was born July 2, 1969, in Davenport, Iowa. A 1987 graduate from North High School in Davenport, he went on and received degrees from the following schools: Universite Laval, Quebec City, QC 1989 in advanced French studies program; University of Iowa, 1991, B.A., French and secondary education; Palmer Chiropractic College, 1996, Doctor of Chiropractic; Logan College of Chiropractic, St. Louis, Mo., 1998, manipulation under anesthesia; and University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine, Netherlands Antilles, 2004, Doctor of Medicine.
Dr. Roes worked for Moore Family Clinic in Moore, Okla., from 1997 to 1999, as Doctor of Chiropractic; and for Emergency Practice Associates in Waterloo, Iowa, from 2006 to 2007 as an emergency room physician.
In 2007, Dr. Roes opened his own practice called Metropolitan Family Practice & Chiropractic in Hiawatha. He also was a wound management physician from 2009 to 2014 for the Wound & Hyperbaric Center, UnityPoint Health in Cedar Rapids.
On Oct. 10, 2015, he married Gerald Anzalone in Robins.
Dr. Roes was awarded the Resident Teacher Award by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine in June 2007 in recognition of his demonstrated interest, ability and commitment to family medicine education. He received the Doctors Day Award by the Linn County Medical Society in March 2012 in recognition of his commitment to the medical profession and patients.
Dr. Roes was the first dually licensed chiropractic physician and doctor of medicine in Iowa. Dr. Roes was certified in hyperbaric medicine and wound care and received certification from the University of Iowa College of Medicine as a clinical laboratory director.
Dr. Roes was a member of American Academy of Family Physicians and Linn County Medical Society. From 1987 to 1991, he was a member of the University of Iowa Gymnastics team, where he competed at the national level and the NCAA Championships. Dr. Roes also coached gymnastics in the 1990s, including Tiffany Chapman, who was rated among the top 20 gymnasts in the country.
He devoted his time to his medical practice and provided personalized patient care. In his free time, Dr. Roes loved to travel, especially when he was able to speak French. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his grandma, Eleanor. Dr. Roes was passionate about caring for his four dogs rescued throughout the Caribbean.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made on behalf of Dr. Matthew Roes to Cedar Valley Humane Society or Humane Society International.
