Matthew Harry Abbott, 49, of Swisher, formerly of Clinton, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2017. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 5, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Funeral service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, at the funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Craig Peters. Private family inurnment will be at
a later date.
Survivors include his wife, Tracie; two sons, Mason and Brodie; parents, Sandra (Bud) Kiene of Dubuque and Jon Abbott of Clinton; sister, Amy Henrikson of Montgomery, Ill.; brother, Peter (Abbey) Abbott of Coralville; mother- and father-
in-law, Kathy and Frank Neustel of Central City; grandmother, LaVonne Barnes of Clinton; and nieces and nephews, Julia and Cole Henrikson and Duncan and Quinn Abbott.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harry Barnes and Grace and Lee Abbott; and cousin, Jenny Barnes.
Matt was born Dec. 28, 1967, in Petersburg, Va., the son of Jon and Sandra Abbott. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1986. In 1993, he graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College with a B.A. in computer science, and was an accomplished hurdler on the track team. On June 7, 1997, Matt and Tracie (Neustel) were united in marriage in Cedar Rapids. Matt worked at Collins Community Credit Union in Cedar Rapids in IT support.
He was very active with his sons in the Boy Scouts of America as former assistant cubmaster and popcorn chair of Pack 37, and currently as treasurer of Troop 214. Matt attended Shueyville United Methodist Church. He was a member of a bowling team with his co-workers at May City Bowl in Cedar Rapids, and was an avid Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Bears fan. Matt enjoyed camping, but did NOT like going on hikes. He enjoyed singing, cooking and golf.
Matt was a kid at heart, and loved playing video and board games with his family and friends. Matt especially enjoyed spending time with his family and with their close circle of scouting friends.
He will be greatly missed by all his friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Matt's memory.
