Matt, Odelia Marguerite
Odelia Marguerite Matt, 91, of Castalia, died Friday, Septe. 7, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville.
Odelia was born Feb. 18, 1921, to Henry and Lucy (Tujetsch) Stroschein in Garber, Iowa. She attended a country school in Garnavillo through the eighth grade. On Dec. 30, 1941, Odelia was married to Harold Louis Matt at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo. To this union, nine children were born. The family farmed between Postville and Castalia. Odelia enjoyed gardening, canning, knitting, sewing, cooking, baking, helping on the farm, driving tractor, spending time with family and she was famous for her homemade bread and cinnamon rolls.
Odelia is survived by her nine children, Kathleen (Marv) Lahti of Annandale, Minn., David (Sandy) Matt of Cedar Rapids, Delbert (Eileen) Matt of Marion, Judy (Cletus) White of Center Point, Mary (Daryl) Helgerson of Castalia, James (Debbie) Matt of Clermont, Ricky Matt of Decorah, Phyllis (Bob) Ottaway of Waterville and Linda (Mike) Plaht of Postville; 33 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; a brother, Francis (Amy) Stroschein of Prairie du Chien, Wis,; and several nieces and nephews.
Odelia was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents, Henry and Lucy (Tujetsch) Stroschein; one sister, Anita Johnson; and three brothers, August, Cyrenus and Lawrence.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, with a Scripture service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation also will be held one hour before mass on Wednesday at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Postville. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Postville, with the Rev. Greg Bahl as celebrant. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St, Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo.
Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service is helping the family with the arrangements.
