Matousek, Mary Grace
Mary Grace Matousek, 90, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Services: 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Independence. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and at the church after 10 a.m. Monday.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Matousek of Hiawatha and Barbara Matousek of Houston, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and four siblings.
Mary Grace was born Jan. 8, 1920, in St. Paul, Minn., the daughter of Guy and Grace (Wilson) Wiley. The family moved to Milwaukee and she graduated from Milwaukee Downer College in 1941. Mary Grace joined the WAVES in the United States Naval Reserve in 1943 and was discharged as Lieutenant Jr. Grade in 1949. While in the Navy she was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Long Beach, Calif., where she established the Occupational Therapy Department.
Mary Grace married O. Edwin Matousek on July 25, 1945, in Long Beach, Calif. They lived in Newton, Mason City, Oelwein, Cedar Rapids and Independence. He died in 1990.
Mary Grace was the head of the Occupational Therapy Department at the Iowa Mental Health Institute in Independence for over 28 years, retiring in 1985. She was recognized by the Iowa Occupational Therapy Association in 1982 for 40 years of dedicated service.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Independence, Peoples Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, a lifetime member of the Iowa Occupational Therapy Association, and proudly served in the Navy during World War II.
Memorial donations may be given to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
