Matias, Robert W.
Robert W. Matias of Cedar Rapids died at Mercy Medical Center Wednesday, March 9, 2011, after a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. March 14 at All Saints Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids by the Rev. David O'Connor. Entombment: Mount Calvary Cemetery, with military rites. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, where there will be a vigil service at 2:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the church after 9:30 a.m. Monday.
Bob is survived by his wife, Judith; his children, Michael (Kathy), James and Matthew (Kim); stepchildren, Donald Campbell, Debra Hankins and Jamison Campbell; four grandchildren, Jonathan, Mitchell, Steven and Brandon; stepgrandchildren, Chelsea and Nicole Cox, Leaha Campbell, Justin Hartgrave, Steven and Mitchell Kinney and Joey Hankins; his favorite sisters, Joan Mosel (James) and Patricia Gilliatt (Mark); two nieces, Lindsay Vanni and Anne Laverty; and a nephew, Daniel Gilliatt.
Robert was born April 12, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, to William and Maxine (Rozek) Matias. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1955. Robert graduated from Coe College and the University of Iowa Law School in 1961. He married Barbara Lani Fisher in June 1960. They were divorced in 1984. He practiced law in Cedar Rapids with his father William J. Matias. In 1963 and 1964, he was appointed Assistant Linn County Attorney. He later was in private practice associated with Robert W. Wilson until he retired in July 2010. He married Judith Hach on Dec. 31, 1989.
He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, Linn County Bar Association, Linn County Pheasants Forever, Eastern Iowa Ducks Unlimited, Otter Creek Sportsman's Club, and the Cedar Valley Marine Corps League. He was also a life long member of All Saints Church. He was a friend of Bill W.
Robert loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting with family, friends and his dog, Gabe. He enjoyed spending time at the family cabin at Lake Delhi. He was a fan of the Hawkeyes and the Bears.
Bob had a great sense of humor and was a great storyteller. He loved to be with people especially his family.
Memorials may be given to Ducks Unlimited or Pheasants Forever.
