Mathews, Douglas L.
Douglas L. Mathews, 91, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. A private memorial will be held for the family at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include sister, Marilyn (Vern) Wilkes of Watertown, Wis.; nieces and nephews, Bob (Nancy) Wilkes of Hales Corners, Wis., Linda Stark of Watertown, Wis., Dan Wilkes of West Brandenton, Fla., and Laura (Jon) McGarvey of Wausau, Wis. eight great-nieces and great-nephews; one great-great-niece; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Gary Stark.
Douglas was born Nov. 23, 1920, son of Harry and Iris (Lane) Mathews. He graduated from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids in 1938. He received his B.A. from Cornell College in Mount Vernon and his M.A. from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Douglas served in the United States Army during World War II. He taught English at Franklin High School for 37 years.
Douglas was a very private person and a published poet. He loved tending his flower garden and yard.
