Mather, Don
Don Mather, 72, of Palo, passed away Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy from cancer. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Jeremy Hudson. Burial: Palo Cemetery, with military rites by Shellsburg American Legion Post No. 166. Friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Don is survived by his children, Shane Mather of Palo, Todd Mather of Shellsburg, Wendy Dostal of Cedar Rapids, Matt Mather of Palo, and Dana (Jamie) Franck of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; best friend, Marcia Cook; two sisters, Cheryl Beachler of Cedar Rapids, and Delores (Gary) Peterson of California; and brother, Ken (Joanne) Mather of Marengo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clifford (Eunice) Mather; nephew, Tim Mather; and daughter, Shelly Mather.
Don was born March 28, 1937, to Clifford and Nellie Moubry Mather in a farm house in Vernon Center, Minn. He moved to the Palo area in March 1941. He graduated from Palo High School in 1955. He served in the Navy from 1955 to 1959. Don married Sherry Smith in 1962. They later divorced. He graduated from Kirkwood Community College with an Applied Science Degree. He was a trustee for Fayette Township. He worked at Wilson Farmstead, Pennick and Ford and Amana Whirlpool. Don farmed all his life, until he retired.
