Mason, Minnie Kathryn
Minnie Kathryn Mason, a longtime resident of Cedar Rapids, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at Living Center West in Cedar Rapids.
She was born on July 7, 1921, to John and Lillie (Kokemiller) Fox on the Fox family farm on Highway 30 some six miles west of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Rose; and her husband, Harry L. Mason Jr.
She is survived by her two sons, Steven Lee (Sheila Ann) and Kenneth Lynn; grandsons, Dustin Lee (Danielle) and Jeffrey Lynn; sister, Velma Lutz (John); brother-in-law, William J. Mason (Janice); and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Minnie attended elementary and high school in Atkins, Iowa, played on the girl's basketball team and in the school band. She attended and graduated from Cedar Rapids Business College. Upon graduation, she worked as a stenographer in the purchasing department at Iowa-Electric Light and Power Co. While working there, she married Harry L. Mason Jr. on June 22, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Her husband, Harry, was working at Cherry-Burrell when they married, but they soon went into farming on the Fox family farm for over 20 years. When the farm was sold, they moved to Cedar Rapids and went into the restaurant and bar business in Cedar Rapids. The name of the business was Del Rey Place.
Her husband, Harry, passed away on Sept. 11, 1975, at the age of 51. Upon the passing of her husband, the restaurant was sold and Minnie returned to her office work at Sieg's and retired from there in 1988.
Minnie was efficient and a hard worker, loved her garden, and was a loving and caring daughter.
The family appreciates her faithful and devoted son, Kenneth, and thank him for his kindness and support for his mother since the passing of his father.
