Masen Steven Akers, 25, died peacefully in his sleep at home Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Family committal services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the charity of their choice or to the Masen Akers Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 167, Iowa City, IA 52244.
Masen was born July 16, 1996, in Iowa City, the son of Mark Akers and Kymm Barnes. He was a 2014 graduate of Washington High School in Cedar Rapids and attended Kirkwood Community College.
Masen loved to ski and had worked at the ski resort, Arapahoe Basin, in Colorado. He later moved to St. Paul, Minn., where he met his partner, Elsa. Most recently they had made West Des Moines their home. Masen was employed at REI Coop. He loved to camp in the great outdoors, was a gifted cook, loved his cats, Max and Siri, and had enjoyed building a computer with his brother.
Masen was a friend to many. His quick wit, kind heart, gentle spirit and big hugs will be greatly missed.
Masen is survived by his parents, Mark Akers of North Liberty and Kymm Barnes (fiance Rick Twedt) of Cedar Rapids; his brother, Landen Akers of Los Angeles, Calif.; his partner, Elsa Baeckeroot of West Des Moines; grandparents, Pat and Pam DeCarlo of Cedar Rapids, and Al Barnes Jr. and partner Lori Schultz of Sunrise Beach, Mo.; aunts and uncles, Al (Sherry) Barnes III, of Virginia, Danielle DeCarlo of Maryland and Matthew (Angela Friesenborg) Akers and their daughter, Elena, of North Liberty; and numerous other extended family members.
Masen was preceded in death by grandparents, Lynn and Pat Akers.
