Maryellen Marie Cazanas, 87, died peacefully May 1, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Family committal services will be held Friday at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Fossil & Prairie Center, 1227 215th St., Rockford, IA 50468; Friends of the Iowa City Public Library Foundation; or the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City.
Maryellen was born Sept. 30, 1929, in Eagle Grove, the daughter of Bernard and Serena Christiansen Meiers. She was a graduate of Boone High School. On Aug. 21, 1954, Maryellen married A. John Cazanas in Mason City.
Maryellen was a supervisor with Northwestern Bell for many years and was a part-time librarian in Rockford. In 2010, Maryellen moved to Coralville and in 2013, she moved to Oaknoll.
Maryellen is survived by two daughters, Vicki (Dick) Siefers of Coralville and Joanna (Scot) Lindley of Nora Springs; four grandchildren, Kyle and Andrea Siefers and Cody and Amber Lindley; her sister, Sherrill (Marvin) Maritsch of Minneapolis; and brother-in-law, Charles White of Mason City.
Maryellen was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Penny Cazanas; and two siblings, Bernadine White and Gordon Meiers.
