MARY WEIMER
Cedar Rapids
Mary Weimer, 78, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully in her sleep after many years of multiple chronic illnesses. Her courage in facing these was an example of overcoming adversity for all who knew her.
Mary graduated from Washington Senior High then went on the earn her B.S. and elementary teaching certificate. She moved to Michigan with her husband and taught third grade, incorporating many advanced concepts into her classrooms. During that time and subsequent to a divorce, Mary earned a Ph.D. in philosophy, became an ordained minister, and earned a Master's degree in social work. She worked as a school social worker in Central Michigan where she taught seminars for teachers on methods for teaching difficult students and was a strong advocate for the students with whom she worked, many having behavioral and/or mental health issues. She frequently challenged administrators on what the best course of action for these students was.
Mary remained in Michigan for a time following retirement then moved back to Cedar Rapids to live in a retirement home with her prized companion, Buttercup the cat.
Mary is survived by a younger brother, two nephews, their spouses, and a niece, three great-nephews, several cousins, and a few remaining close friends, notably Amber and Susan.
"May she rest in peace and tranquility, free of the illnesses that plagued her in life. She is loved and will reside in our memories."
