Mary E. Walters, 86, of Monmouth, passed away June 29, 2017, at Clover Ridge Place in Maquoketa.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 6, at Zion American Lutheran Church in Wyoming, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at the Barn at Calkins Square in Wyoming. Burial will be in Wyoming Cemetery. Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.
Mary Eleanor Hansen was born April 26, 1931, in Elwood, Iowa, to George P. and Adah (Martin) Hansen. She graduated from Wyoming High School, where she was an All-State basketball player. She then attended AIC in Davenport, where she was captain of the traveling basketball team. They went on a six-week goodwill tour that traveled through Mexico and all Central American countries to Panama. On July 26, 1952, she married Donald W. Dirks in Iowa City. He preceded her in death on July 31, 1978. She married Rodney Walters on March 23, 1985, in Wyoming. He preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 2013.
Mary worked as an accountant for Bill Helms Inc. (Strieter Motors) in Davenport for several years and then moved and worked at Clinton Engines in Maquoketa as a bookkeeper for over 41 years, retiring in 2002.
Mary was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church in Wyoming and had served as treasurer of the Mary Rebecca Circle. She also had been a member of the Red Hat Society and Clinton Engines Historical Society.
Mary enjoyed traveling, gambling, golfing, playing cards, riding motorcycles, dancing, and most of all, attending all sporting events of her children and grandchildren.
Those left to honor Mary's memory include her children, Debi (Joe) Hronik of Davenport, Jeff Dirks of Center Junction, Steven (Cindy) Dirks of Wyoming and Sharon (Mike) Holmes of Delmar; her stepchildren, Jeff (Donna) Walters of Lisbon and Debra (Thomas) Vaccaro of Williamsburg, Va.; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and brothers, George (Herta) Hansen and John "Bill" (Lola) Hansen, both of Wyoming.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Donald and Rodney; a son, Daniel; brothers, Rex and Dale; and sisters, Maxine, Charlene, Doris, Ellen and Georgeann.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Mary E. Walters Memorial Fund has been established.
