Amana
Mary E. Volz, 95, of Amana, died Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Colonial Manor of Amana, following a short illness. Funeral Services: 10 a.m. Friday, March 7, Kloster
Funeral Home, Marengo, with the Rev. Matt German officiating. Burial will be in Lenox Cemetery, rural Amana. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Donna Smith and husband Greg of Amana; three grandchildren, Stacey Takes (John) of Cascade, Marti DeLay (John) of Chicago and Keith Smith (Sarah) of Collegeville, Pa.; and six great-grandchildren, Riley and Robyn Takes and Kyle, Kaitlyn, Jeremiah and Anna Smith.
Also surviving is a sister, Mildred Koenig of Walker; two brothers, Ivan Kahler of Williamsburg and Donald Kahler of Oceanside, Calif.; and two sisters-in-law, Esther Kahler of Portland, Ore., and Marguerite Kahler of Marengo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter in 2003; and four brothers, Everett, Floyd and Howard and Leo in infancy.
Mary Elizabeth Kahler was born Dec. 26, 1918, in rural Oxford, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Stella DeGood Kahler. She attended the rural Iowa County schools and married Walter Volz on Feb. 24, 1948, at the First United Methodist Church in Marengo. The couple farmed for many years in Iowa County. In earlier years, Mary attended New Jerusalem Church, rural Norway.
