Mary Elizabeth Velky, 78, of Solon, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at Brosh Chapel in Solon, located at 100 S. Cedar St., with burial to follow in Sulek Cemetery near Shueyville. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel.
Mary was born May 9, 1935, in Shabbona, Ill., the daughter of Floyd and Gladys Buchanan. She graduated from Waterman Community High School in Waterman, Ill. She was united in marriage to Emil Thomas Velky Sr. on Nov. 3, 1956, in Shabbona. Mary and Emil farmed near Ainsworth until moving to Ely, continuing farming and operating the trucking company.
Mary worked at Powers Truck Port in Cedar Rapids, Double C in Ely, Country Cafe in Solon and for the College Community School District as a cook until her retirement.
She enjoyed going to auctions and sales, traveling, going to the casino, sitting on the porch and watching the outdoors and spending time with her family.
Mary was very involved in Velky and Sons Trucking, as well as the Solon American Legion Auxillary and had served as president of the First District.
Mary is survived by her husband, Emil, of over 57 years; her children, Emil Velky Jr. (Dona Wensel) of Cedar Rapids, Gloria (Pat) Malatek of Ely, Cheryl Velky of Brandon, Charlie (Julie) Velky of Cedar Rapids, Brian (Karrie) Velky of Ely and Tanya Velky (Chris McAfee) of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Gladys Buchanan; a daughter, Donna Marie Velky-Clark; and her brother, Charles Buchanan.
