MARY ETHEL VALENTA
Cedar Rapids
Mary Ethel Valenta, 95, of Cedar Rapids, died June 21, 2017, at Hiawatha Care Center. Services: 2 p.m. Monday at St. Matthew Catholic Church, by the Rev. Mark Osterhaus. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Teahen Funeral Home, with a vigil service at 4:15 p.m.
Mary is survived by three sons, Jim (Caryl), Tom (Brenda) and Ron (Renee) Valenta, all of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, Marc, Robin, Chip, Jamie, Zak, Adam, Calvin, Mitchell and Trenton; nine great- grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1982.
Mary was born Aug. 25, 1921, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Darrah) Hurych. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School, and then went on to marry the love of her life, Frank, in August 1942.
Mary was a caring person, who always was eager to help anyone. She enjoyed traveling and above all, loved the time she spent with her family. Her children fondly remember how every weekend they would go out boating and camping, often not returning till late on Sunday. When she wasn't busy watching her beloved Cubs, she could be found rooting for the Hawkeyes. An avid crocheter, she knitted blankets and afghans for countless people. She was a volunteer at Mercy for many years, as well as a member of St. Monica's Circle.
