MARY "SUNDAY" ANTRIM
Solon
Mary "Sunday" Antrim, 74, of Solon, beloved wife of Richard Antrim and mother of Susan Velani and Alicia Highlander, died peacefully from a brief cardiac event on June 10, 2016. A Celebration of Life will be 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Solon. Friends may visit with the family one hour before the service.
Sunday was born March 10, 1942, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Fortunato Joseph and Irene Neglia. After her father finished medical school at Georgetown University, her family settled in Maxwell, Iowa, where she lived until attending the University of Iowa where she met her husband, Richard, of 53 years. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a minor in anthropology.
Richard and Sunday married the summer after college in August 1964, just before driving to State College, Pa., before Richard began his graduate studies at Penn State University. There, Sunday was employed by the university before having her first child, Susan.
Sunday and Richard's second cross-country move was to Clinton, Iowa, where they lived for several years and had their second child, Alicia. After additional moves to Sparta, N.J., and a northern suburb of Chicago, they moved to Solon, Iowa, where she spent the remaining 24 years of her life.
Sunday was a beloved and active member of her community. It is truly an understatement to say she was active in several clubs and groups – one of her many passions. She was a Master Gardener and active in the Iowa City Garden Club. She and Richard were active supporters of Trees Forever organization and were certified tree stewards for the state of Iowa. Sunday also spent a great deal of time gardening at home where she had flower, herb and vegetable gardens. She and Richard also had a large locally known pepper garden.
Sunday was a PEO member for more than 30 years and active in the Iowa City PEO chapter, where she held various officer and leadership positions through the years. Sunday was beloved by her many friends from the local community, out of state and around the world, many of whom were friends for 40 years.
Sunday is survived by her husband, Richard; daughters, Susan (Asif) Velani and Alicia (John) Highlander; granddaughter, Paige Highlander; and sister, Angela Kabala.
Sunday will be remembered for living a rich and active life filled with family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the charity of your choice or to the family, who will distribute them to several of Sunday's favorite charities.
