Mary Adele (Thomas) Smith, 87, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, after courageously coping with Alzheimer's disease.
A celebration of life will be Jan. 7 at Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, with visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by the memorial service at 10:30 a.m. A luncheon will follow the service at First United Church of Christ. A family graveside service will be held in the spring at Hazel Knoll Cemetery.

Surviving are five children, Robert (Linda) Smith of Fayetteville, N.C., Cris (Steve) Sickels and Vicki Rickels, both of Marion, Dean Smith of North Liberty and Mary (Harvey) Hall of Hiawatha; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lorene (Willard) Clark, Gwendolyn Willard and Judy Beckett, all of Anamosa; two brothers, Francis "Pruney" (Jan) Thomas of Anamosa and Jim (Fonda) Thomas of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; and lots of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; sisters, Betty, Naone and Doris; and brothers, Carl, Glen and Leon "Tommy."
Mary was born Aug. 11, 1929, in Fairview, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Mattie (Raymond) Thomas. Mary attended Fairview Schools. She married Robert Smith in 1946 and the couple farmed in Buffalo Township, Linn County, Iowa. In 1969, she began working at Rockwell Collins, where she retired as an inspector in 1984.
Mary was a member of First United Church of Christ in Anamosa. She was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels and Anamosa Ambulance Service.
She thoroughly enjoyed traveling, walking, reading, baking, gardening, mushroom hunting, watching nature, listening to music, playing cards, playing golf and spending time with her family and volunteer work.
Her smile will be missed by everyone who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels or Anamosa Senior Dining Center.
