Mary Virginia Shedek, 60, of Marion, died Monday, July 21, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, with a vigil service beginning at 4 p.m. Burial: Springville Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Allen; children, Katie (Justin) Kensinger, Michael (Samantha) Shedek and Allison Shedek, all of Marion; grandchildren, Harrison, Hudson and Hadley Kensinger and Emmett and Eli Shedek; and siblings, Sharon (Bob Naujoks)
Reilly of Marion, Cathy Schirmer of Cedar Rapids and Chuck (Eileen) Reilly of LeGrand.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Richard "Tom" Reilly.
Mary was born Aug. 28, 1953, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Richard A. and Anna (Gallo) Reilly. She graduated from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, with the class of 1971. Mary and Allen were married on April 28, 1973, in Cedar Rapids. She earned her bachelor's in social work from Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids and eventually went on to earn her Master's Degree from the University of Iowa in 2011. Mary was a certified anthropologist with emphasis in death and dying, a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Association for Death Education and Counseling and the National Alliance for Mentally Ill. She was a social worker, most recently with Hospice of Mercy for the last six years. Mary enjoyed many crafts, reading, music, card making, jewelry making and playing her guitar at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, where she was a member for many years.
Mary had been blessed by the love and support of many good friends and family members. Prayers and faith were an important component in her journey from this life into the next.
Her family would like to thank all those who have shared their love, support, and friendship during this time. They would also like to thank her former coworkers with Hospice of Mercy, who became her daily caregivers, for all of the warmth and compassionate care she received from and through them.
A memorial fund has been established in Mary's memory. Donations will be directed to Hospice of Mercy and St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion.
