MARY SEVERIDT
Des Moines
Mary Kathryn Severidt, whose life blessed family, friends, co-workers and patients, died Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at her home in Des Moines.
Mary was a lover of nature, a reveler of music concerts and festivals, a seeker of beauty in the written word. Not only did Mary find joy in all of these, but she good-naturedly challenged those around her to recognize the delicacy and balance of the outer world, the elegance of literature and music and the strength of friends and family.
As a nurse, these passions shone through her impacting the lives of patients and their families at Broadlawns and UnityPoint. Mary was a nurse who was respected as much for her skill as for her empathy. Mary was the nurse that patients and families, remembering her kindness, would hug and thank in a movie theater five years after their hospitalization.
Mary was a friend ready to share joy or sorrow over a glass of wine -- her warm smile encouraging, her easy laugh filling the room.
She was a pet parent to Rebecca; a proud aunt to Kyra and Olivia; a little sister who loved her big brother, Matt, even though he blamed her for eating the whole blueberry pie; a daughter who enjoyed spending time with her parents, whether a lunch date with Linda or a U2 concert with Larry.
She will be remembered for her uniqueness, her empathy and her extraordinary ability to instill joy in others.
Those left to cherish and honor Mary's memory include her parents, Dr. Larry and Linda Severidt of Des Moines; brother, Dr. Matt (Desiree) Severidt of Grinnell; nieces, Kyra and Olivia; grandparents, Donald and Eloise Severidt of Des Moines; aunts, Mary Miskimen and Donna (John) Koehler of Cedar Rapids; aunt, Kindera Severidt of Jacksonville, Fla.; uncles, Dean Severidt of Dallas and Dan (Elizabeth) Severidt of Adel; dear friend, Brenda Colvin of Tucson, Ariz.; and many extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Ed and Frances Hembera; and her nephew, Nathan William Severidt.
Mary's family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel, 2121 Grand Ave., Des Moines. Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 23, at Grace United Methodist Church, 3700 Cottage Grove Ave., Des Moines.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation or Animal Rescue League.
