Mary E. Leonhardt Schupanitz, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Nov.
1, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Teahen Funeral Home. Burial will follow visitation at Oak
Shade Cemetery.
Mary is survived by her two sons, Douglas (Janet) of Cedar Rapids and David of Kansas City; two daughters, Ellen (Charles) Blood of Cedar Rapids and Eunice (Scott) Cunningham of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Lantz Kleckner, Ashley, Amber and Gary Gronwaldt; and a sister, Joyce. Mary and her late husband, Elmer, cared for 40 foster children over the years, besides adopting three children.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Elmer; second husband, Gerald; two brothers, James and Laverne; and two sisters, Bertha and Louise.
Mary Elizabeth was born July 7, 1926, in Marion, the daughter of George and Hazel Brink Klaner. She attended Lakeside No. 20 country school and Marion High School. She married Elmer Leonhardt on March 27, 1948, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Marion. They lived in Middle Amana until 1970, when they moved to Cedar Rapids. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church and then Concordia Lutheran Church. She married Gerald Schupanitz on April 7, 2005, in Cedar Rapids.
Mary enjoyed gardening, crafts, flowers, baking and cooking.
