Mary K. (Mrs. Joseph) Ryan, of DeWitt, died early Saturday morning, Nov. 19, 2016, at Hallmar nursing facility, Cedar Rapids.
Mrs. Ryan, the former Mary Katherine McDermott, was born Sept. 17, 1921, in DeWitt to Cleo and Helena (Beitenman) McDermott. She graduated from Mount Mercy Academy in Cedar Rapids and from Marycrest College in Davenport in 1968, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Mary was united in marriage to Joseph L. Ryan on June 2, 1942, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Petersville. The couple resided in the DeWitt area where they raised their family. Mary was an elementary school teacher at St. Joseph School in DeWitt for seven years and a sixth-grade math teacher at Central Community Schools, DeWitt, for 20 years, until retirement in 1982.
She was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, and its Altar and Rosary Society. Mary also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary in DeWitt. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and time with her family.
Surviving are her husband, Joe; children, Lourdes McGrath of Simi Valley, Calif., Regina (Chris) Williams of Hiawatha, Martin (Pat) Ryan of Waterloo, Teresa Lynch of Minneapolis and Joseph A. Ryan of Redondo Beach, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Pat Ryan of Iowa City and Randa (Fred) Knee of West Gardiner, Maine; a sister-in-law, Margaret McDermott of DeWitt; brothers-in-law, James Kane of Cedar Rapids and Paul McMahon of Des Moines; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Larry and Dennis Ryan; brothers, Leonard and William McDermott; and sisters, Jean McDermott, Ann Barrios, Lois Sterenchuk, Helene Kane, Josephine McMahon and Teresa McDermott.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, with a vigil service at 6:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, with the Rev. Father Paul Connolly officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph School and Mercy Hospice.
