Central City
Mary J. Peck, 77, of Central City, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial service: 10 a.m. Monday, June 27, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, conducted by Pastor Josh Hansen. The family will greet friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Burial: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Urbana.
Mary is survived by her children, Yvonne Hawthorn of Anamosa, Joe (Karen) Hawthorn of Central City, Douglas Hawthorn of Cedar Rapids, Debborah (Rick) Elliott of Prairieburg and Kim Smith of Central City; four grandchildren, Cheri (Curt) Kadlec, Matthew (Jody) Elliott, Kyrah Peck and Katrina Smith; one great-grandson, Caleb; and sisters, Betty (Leonard) Hartl of Alburnett, Barbara Parbs of Center Point and Patricia (Jerry) McGowan of Yucca Valley, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Donald and James Buchtela; and a sister, Helen Bascom.
Mary was born Aug. 18, 1938, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of William and Jeanette (Mitchell) Buchtela. She graduated from Urbana High School in 1956. Mary worked at Rockwell for 37 years before retiring in 2002. She also worked at Crest in Cedar Rapids and Wal-Mart. Mary enjoyed crafts, especially plastic canvas, playing Tetris, cross stitching and solving crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed watching Tom Selleck and Chuck Norris movies.
