Mary Pauline Stimmel passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2021, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Cosgrove with Father Robert Cloos officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, followed by a Time of Sharing for family and friends. The Rosary and the Sharing Time may be viewed by way of Zoom. The link is under the Tribute Wall on Mary's obituary page at www.lensingfuneral.com. Visitation will follow from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or St. Peter's Catholic Church.
Mary was born Oct. 19, 1957, in Iowa City, the daughter of Richard and Lucile (Meade) Stimmel. Mary attended St. Coletta, a school for special-needs children in Jefferson, Wis., and worked in their laundry for a few years. Mary returned to Iowa City in 1996. She has been a member of the Reach For Your Potential residential and vocational programs and worked at Goodwill Industries. She enjoyed outings with family members and housemates, dancing, music, and cheesecake. Mary participated in Soundreach, Kiwanis Aktion, Special Olympics, and Camp Courageous trips. She will be missed by her brothers, long-term housemates Nancy and Karna, current housemates, and her dedicated Reach For Your Potential caregivers.
Mary is survived by her six brothers, Joe, Mike (Barb), Steve (Mary), Charles (Linda), Maurice and Andy (Marjorie); 10 nieces and nephews, Brad, Kimberly (Jac), Carmine (Ed), John (Sarah), Ann (Celestino), Shawn (Christina), Christopher, Teri (Alex), Melanie (Roy) and Jerry (Jenny); great-nieces and -nephews, and numerous cousins and extended family.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents.
