MARY KATHRYN (HOYLAND) MICHALICEK
Cedar Rapids
Mary Kathryn (Hoyland) Michalicek, daughter of Adelbert and Pearl (Junker) Hoyland, was born Jan. 16, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She passed away April 17, 2017, at 89 years of age. She was united in marriage on March 26, 1948, to the late Robert (Bob) Michalicek, who passed away on Nov. 4, 2003.
Mary and Bob attended Central Park Presbyterian Church, which provided a rich environment for Sunday school and community, as they raised their five children. They then joined Faith Bible Church, enjoying the rest of their lives as active congregants. They found special joy in being active in all aspects of church life.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Cathy and Sherry, who live in New Mexico; and sons, Steven and Michael, who live in Iowa. Her third son, Jeff, passed away on Dec. 20, 1987. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Mary graduated from Franklin High School in 1946, receiving honors in the Girls Athletic Association and Latin Club. She attended Cedar Rapids Business College and began work at Iowa Manufacturing Co. Most of her time was spent raising five children and finding ways to make ends meet. However, she found time to remain active in the church, PTA and election committees and continued part-time work as a Realtor and sales rep for Nutrilite. Her interests included horticulture, cooking, medicine, square dancing and brainteasers, such as crossword and sudoku puzzles.
For those who knew Mary, they would say that she was best known for her faith in God, commitment to family, courageous spirit, strong mental acuity and can-do attitude. She valued all people highly and equally, was an easy conversationalist, and possessed a gentle spirit and gracious heart.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 21, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at Faith Bible Church in Cedar Rapids, with interment at Cedar Memorial, next to Bob. A reception will follow at Faith Bible Church. Pastor Brian Hill of Faith Bible Church will officiate.
Memorials in Mary's name may be made to Faith Bible Church and the Boys and Girls Club of America.
Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.cedarmemorial.com under Obituaries.
