Mary K. "Marikay" Landis Gerig, 91, of Mount Pleasant, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant. Visitation will begin at noon Sunday, July 23, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, with family present at 2 p.m. until the time of the service at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Trey Hegar officiating. Born March 2, 1926, in Newton, Kan., Mary Kathryn was the daughter of M.D. and Erie (Byler) Landis. She spent her formative years in Kansas and Oklahoma. She graduated high school from Hesston Academy, Hesston, Kan. "Marikay" attended Sterling University, Sterling, Kan., and Westmar College, Le Mars. On March 7, 1948, she was united in marriage to Allen M. Gerig.
The Gerigs farmed in rural Wayland until 1970 when they moved to Mount Pleasant. Marikay worked as a library assistant for 10 years at the Mount Pleasant Library. In 1985, they moved to Wayland, where they lived until 2005, when they moved to Winfield. Marikay returned to live in Mount Pleasant after the death of her husband, Allen, on Dec. 30, 2010.
Marikay was a member of the Green Mound Church of God before moving to Mount Pleasant. She and her husband then joined Eicher Mennonite Church, Wayland, and she was an active supporter of Gideon's International. Marikay was a voracious reader, fierce Scrabble competitor, an excellent storyteller and was a member of the local quilt club.
Survivors include four daughters, Kathy (Don) Wiley of Mount Pleasant, Carol (Dave) Allender of Camano Island, Wash., LuAnn Sandy of Mount Pleasant and Lori Mallams of North Liberty; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Marikay was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Allen; one son, Reginald Allen Gerig; one grandson, Nathan Emmanuel Mallams; two sisters, Helen Edmondson and Roma Monroe; and two brothers, John Landis and George Landis.
